WHY NIGER?
- It is in the “bottom 10” among the poorest countries in the world
- 61% of the people earn less than $1 a day
- 68% have no access to clean water
- 87% have no access to good sanitation
- Life expectancy is 44.7 years
Given the anticipated population of 18 million in 2015, it will take an investment of $76 million for water and $10 million for sanitation every year for Niger to achieve the Millenium Development Goals set by USAID and the West Africa Water Initiative. The government is investing less than 10% of that currently.
